Visiting Artist and Cultural Researcher program
prehistoricsoul LAB Visiting Artist and Cultural Researcher programme is an artist-led initiative in Denpasar, Bali, offering space for uninterrupted work, and reflection. Emerging from the platform prehistoricsoul.net, the Visiting Artist program emphasizes process over outcome, welcoming practitioners across disciplines, from visual art, performance, and sound, to writing, archaeology, and anthropology.
Visiting Artists are invited to connect with Balinese culture, collaborate with local artists and cultural researchers, or simply focus on their practice in a supportive environment.
Summer 2026 Visiting Artist and Cultural Researcher Programme
The 2026 programme continues in a small-scale and independently structured format centered around artistic and cultural practice, shared exchanges, informal gatherings, and evolving collaborative processes between local and international practitioners.
The programme develops around conversations, shared learning, locally grounded cultural engagement, independently developed artistic and cultural practice, and evolving collaborations with local artists, musicians, researchers, and cultural practitioners in Bali.
Activities may include discussions and exchange sessions, visits to local art spaces and cultural initiatives, optional cultural field/site visits, listening sessions, screenings, collaborative experiments, and site-responsive formats developed during the stay.
Current themes and areas of exchange include Balinese cosmology and landscape, oral histories and cultural memory, ecology, agriculture, and subak systems, sound, rhythm, and ritual, Balinese masks, dance, performance traditions and ceremonial practices, traditional instruments, music, improvisation, collective practice, and independent artistic and cultural production in Bali.
Current programme periods include Mid June - Mid July, and Mid August - Mid September 2026.
