Resilience Threads
In Indonesia, weaving techniques in East Sumba, particularly ikat, are a vital part of the region’s culture. During the colonial period, weavers incorporated new patterns and materials, blending traditional designs with colonial influences. This adaptation reflects how East Sumba’s weavers responded to colonial pressures while preserving their cultural identity. The exhibition explores their resilience and creativity through a series of artistic video works using node-based visual programming and AI. Each piece visually interprets the transformation of selected textiles, presenting traditional motifs intertwined with colonial influences. Accompanied by audio recordings of traditional weaving songs, the videos offer a layered narrative of heritage and adaptation.
